Why measure readability?

Overly complex text drives readers away. Google integrates this in UX signals: time on page, bounce rate, scroll. Readable content retains better, thus ranks better.

Most major media aim for a Flesch score of 60-70 (accessible to average middle schoolers). For a technical B2B blog, 50-60 is acceptable.

The Flesch scale explained

Flesch Reading Ease ranges from 0 (very complex) to 100 (very easy). How to interpret:

  • 90-100 — Very easy (grade 3-4)
  • 70-90 — Easy to read (middle school / late primary)
  • 60-70 — Standard (average adult reader)
  • 30-60 — Difficult (high school / college level)
  • 0-30 — Extremely difficult (specialized academic level)

How to improve your score

  • Shorten sentences (aim for 15-20 words average).
  • Replace complex words with common synonyms.
  • Break paragraphs longer than 4 lines.
  • Use bullet lists and subheadings to breathe.
  • Avoid heavy connectors in favor of simple ones.
