Why count in pixels instead of characters?

Google doesn't truncate by character count but by pixel width. An uppercase "W" takes 3-4x more space than a lowercase "i". Counting in characters is a rough approximation that can mislead you.

A 60-character title can be truncated with many uppercase letters, while a 65-character title may fit if mostly in thin lowercase.

Google display limits

Current approximate thresholds (in displayed width):

  • Desktop title: ~580 pixels (≈ 50-60 characters)
  • Mobile title: ~480 pixels
  • Meta description: ~990 pixels desktop (≈ 155 characters)
